endpointX were engaged to provide a Tanium managed service and IT hygiene improvement programme to a business group with a large number of operationally independent subsidiaries.

endpointX project managed the Tanium rollout, progressing the initial Tanium deployment by engaging and working with individual operating companies and adapting to each ones specific requirements. As the initial rollout progressed, the endpointX team made use of Tanium’s discovery capabilities to identify assets that had been lost from the operating companies inventory. Once under Tanium management, inventory data is repopulated and always up-to-date.

After the Tanium rollout, the project moved into its hygiene improvement phase. Initial work focused on implementing patch applicability scans to identify the backlog in outstanding patches. This was remediated through an initial patch deployment to address this backlog. Subsequent patching cycles are handled automatically using Tanium’s patching framework with patches being applied to workstations rapidly, and servers being remediated in phased patching windows. This approach ensures operating system vulnerabilities are quickly remediated and reduces the cybersecurity risk exposure.

This patching strategy is complemented with a number of other initiatives conducted by endpointX: visibility of outstanding vulnerabilities is identified using Tanium, vulnerabilities are then addressed either through BAU patching or, in the case of critical zero-day vulnerabilities, specific ‘sniper’ remediation actions are taken via Tanium to reduce the risk of being compromised; compliance to the latest cybersecurity standards is measured and addressed by enforcing policies; third-party software is automatically updated as soon as a new version is released, again reducing the risk of comprise via exploiting known vulnerabilities in out of date software.
